How to Split STL Files for 3D Printing

When a model is larger than your printer's build volume, the usual workaround is slicing it manually in CAD software and designing your own registration features — slow, fiddly work. This STL splitter does it in one step: pick a cut plane, choose pins or a dovetail, and download print-ready pieces.

When to Use the STL Splitter:

  • Large props and cosplay parts: Print helmets, swords, and armor in sections
  • Big functional prints: Brackets, enclosures, and fixtures beyond your bed size
  • Tall models: Cut height-wise to avoid wobble and layer shifting on tall prints
  • Multi-color or multi-material prints: Split a model to print sections separately

Connector Options:

  • Alignment pins: Cylindrical pins with matching sockets, automatically placed where the cut face has enough material. Ideal for gluing with CA or epoxy.
  • Dovetail joint: A tapered rail across the cut face that slides together and resists pull-apart forces without glue.
  • Fit clearance: Adjustable 0–0.5 mm socket clearance to match your printer's tolerance.

Tips for Strong Joints:

  • Place the cut through the thickest section of the model so pins have material to anchor into
  • Use 0.15 mm clearance as a starting point for FDM printers; tighten to 0.1 mm for well-tuned machines
  • Orient each piece with the cut face on the print bed for the cleanest mating surface
  • For load-bearing parts, prefer the dovetail and add glue in the joint for maximum strength
